Telugu Cinema in the 70s – 2

Continued from Telugu Cinema in the 70s – 1.

Until then we had a healthy share of social, period/historic, and mythological movies. The filmmakers seemed to have regarded education and moderation above entertainment. Close-ups of the antagonists reproaching and songs of the protagonists preaching had been common. Language, costumes, fights were all taken care to be suitable for children and women.

Come 70s, there were several changes. The antagonists did not always feel remorse at the end. Language became more liberal and lyrics a little more explicit. With color coming into the picture at least in songs, costumes became showy and actors became fashion-savvy. It was difficult to not show blood in fights. It is undeniable that this also led to a better experience to the movie-goers.

Period/historic and mythological movies took a backseat. Perhaps due to color’s capability of showing the flaws in cardboard sets and gilt jewelry.

New ‘genres’ crept in. Movies like bommA borusA and tAtA manavaDu proved the non-necessity of stars. mosagALLaku mosagADu spawned westerns, though no other movie in that genre that came after it could reach its stature. allUri sEtArAma rAju became the best Telugu movie on India’s freedom struggle. Middle-class mentality and middle class moved into the mainstream.
